Senior Accountant, SPT Nonfiction

Join Sony Pictures Television Nonfiction’s Finance team in a broad, business-facing role supporting television, documentary film, music, and other entertainment operations. The Senior Accountant will own key close, reporting, budgeting, and forecasting activities and serve as a primary finance and accounting partner to producers, business leaders, production accountants, and finance colleagues.

Based in our Van Nuys office and reporting to the Corporate Controller, this role will analyze monthly results, explain key performance drivers, assess the financial implications of contracts and new business initiatives, and identify opportunities to improve recurring finance processes.

The successful candidate will combine a strong accounting foundation with analytical curiosity, sound business judgment, and a collaborative working style. They will be proactive, organized, and comfortable managing multiple priorities, working independently, and translating detailed financial information into clear, actionable insights for both finance and non-finance partners.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly divisional financial reporting packages and supporting schedules

  • Analyze results against budget, forecast, and prior year and prepare clear, decision-useful commentary

  • Coordinate and prepare annual budgets and quarterly forecasts, including gathering business inputs, updating assumptions, and consolidating financial information across assigned operations

  • Perform month-end and quarter-end close activities for assigned businesses, including journal entries, accruals, reclassifications, and other accounting adjustments

  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts quarterly and investigate and resolve discrepancies promptly

  • Serve as a key finance and accounting partner to divisional staff, producers, production teams, and other business partners, obtaining the information needed for accurate accounting, forecasting, and reporting

  • Prepare recurring management reports and ad hoc financial analyses for divisional and finance leadership

  • Review contracts and other business documentation to understand financial terms and assess their accounting, accrual, forecasting, and reporting implications

  • Support financial analysis related to new productions and business initiatives

  • Identify and implement improvements to financial reporting, reconciliations, forecasting, and other recurring finance processes, including opportunities for automation

  • Support corporate reporting requirements, internal and external audit requests, controls-related activities, and cross-functional finance initiatives

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance

  • Three or more years of progressive accounting or finance experience

  • Public accounting experience preferred; CPA preferred

  • Ability to manage multiple deadline-driven priorities while maintaining accuracy, sound judgment, and attention to detail

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to interpret financial terms in contracts and other business documentation

  • Ability to work independently while contributing actively to a collaborative team environment

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively and professionally with colleagues across the organization and with external business partners

  • Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with detailed financial data

  • Experience with SAP is a plus

  • Experience using AI-enabled tools to improve finance processes is a plus

  • Media and entertainment experience is a plus

The anticipated base salary for this position is $99,000 - $118,000. This role is overtime eligible and may also qualify for annual incentive and/or comprehensive benefits. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location of the position.
